Homeschool Art Curriculum

Homeschool art classes have become an increasingly sought-after choice for families who prioritize a well-rounded education for their children. Students can nurture their creativity and unlock their potential as budding artists from the comfort of home.

Homeschooling offers a personalized and flexible learning environment tailored to your child’s needs, goals and interests, ensuring they receive the attention and guidance they require to thrive. However, you may need assistance teaching art to your child if you are less artistically inclined.

Fortunately, Power Homeschool offers art classes for elementary and high school students, including quality content resources and video-based lessons from art experts.

Benefits of a Homeschool Art Curriculum

Here are some reasons to jump-start your child’s creativity with art classes.

  • Enhances creative problem-solving abilities: Besides fostering a lifelong love for the arts, activities like drawing, painting and sculpting promote young people’s growth, confidence and problem-solving abilities.
  • Improved observation skills: Children may become more observant as they continue refining their artistic abilities. For example, they might notice slight variations between shades of color or learn to appreciate the nuances of shapes, forms and textures. Sharp attention to detail will serve them well in their other classes and future careers.
  • Appreciation for creation: Homeschool art classes help children appreciate the beauty of different objects, people and the environment. They can also empathize with the hard work others put into their creations.
  • Develops fine motor skills: Art classes for homeschoolers require items like paintbrushes, pencils and modeling clay. The foundation built in class will encourage students to think carefully about the tools and materials they need to bring their vision to life.
  • Builds confidence: Children’s confidence will grow alongside their talents. You can encourage your budding artist with positive feedback and reactions.
  • Boost organizational skills: Children planning and executing an art project must gather the appropriate materials, follow specific steps and clean up after themselves. Along the way, they develop planning, problem-solving and time management abilities — essential in school and later life.

Power Homeschool Art Course Options

Power Homeschool offers two Acellus® homeschool courses for elementary and high school students.

Elementary Art

The Acellus® Elementary Art course offers an immersive journey for elementary homeschoolers to improve their self-expression, creativity and appreciation for different artistic elements and principles. This course teaches children about fundamental artistic aspects like line, color, shape, space, form and texture. They then move on to proportions, the psychology of color and distinctions between different art types.

Students engage in self-discovery as artists, allowing them to explore diverse artistic styles, materials and techniques that bring out their full potential. This class exposes them to a broad skill set and critical eye for appreciating and assessing artwork.

The rest of the course’s 17 units offer even more comprehensive lessons. They combine writing and visual arts in mixed-media projects, show children how to review and celebrate individual artistic elements and analyze well-known artists to understand how particular visuals enhance storytelling.

Divided into 16 units, this course offers education about various aspects of drawing, particularly the importance of artistic integrity, ethics and plagiarism, sustained investigation and finding originality.

This course encourages your child to experiment with different artistic elements, concepts and techniques to develop their unique drawing style. They may also practice photographing and editing their artwork for digital and physical submission and how to write about the artwork in their submissions. These aspects make the AP Drawing course valuable for students aspiring to pursue artistic careers, helping them build their portfolios and refine and master concepts and techniques.
